Botanical Name: Commiphora wightii
Origin: India
Commiphora wightii is a small, thorny tree native to the Middle East and Indian plains. The tree produces a thick resin with a notable fragrance, and its healing properties have been used in Ayurvedic practices for centuries. Our organic guggul gum resin is raw and may need further processing. Guggul resin can be used as incense or employed in similar manners to myrrh.
Guggul has written historical information about it going back to 1000 B.C.E. It was used at that time for "clearing the coating and obstruction of channels". The gum exuded by the guggul tree is similar to myrrh and has been used traditionally in the same ways as myrrh. Guggul is also called bdellium tree, false myrrh, Indian bdellium tree, and guggulu and belongs to the Burseraceae family.
